Police Hunt for 2 Assassins After Indian Gangster Killed in Phuket

Phuket police are investigators are stepping up their hunt for 2 assassins who shot and killed an Indian gangster in Phuket on Friday night, Thailand’s National Police Chief said Monday.

Gen. Suwat Jangyodsuk, the national police chief, arrived on Phuket island yesterday to oversee the investigation into the killing of Jimi Singh Sandhu. He was gunned down at his beachfront villa on Rawai Beach.

According to authorities, the attackers were hiding in Phuket, and they are now being tracked by police as they examine CCTV footage across the island.

According to reports, the victim’s passport identified him as Mandeep Singh. According to the Canada Embassy in Bangkok, he has been stripped of Canadian nationality and deported after being found involved in criminal activity.

Two suspects, likely foreign nationals, are being sought after the killing, according to police. The two gunmen were captured on a CCTV security camera following the attack. Apparently, the killing was the result of rivalry between criminal gangs.

The victim is thought to be a member of an Indian criminal gang active in British Columbia Canada. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the gang he was associated with is said to be involved in the drug trade, human trafficking, and various violent crimes.

Police Sgt. Brenda Winpenny of the RCMP‘s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit said Saturday that the slaying of UN gangster Jimi (Slice) Sandhu in Thailand could reverberate back in Canada.

She said the RCMP’s Anti-gang task force said it was working to head off possible retaliatory violence in the wake of a high-profile former Canadian gangster’s death.

The Phuket Police reported that the victim rented the villa for 100,000 baht per month, and stayed there for 15 days per month. He drove to and from the villa several times daily and had frequent visits from two foreign women, they reported.

In the villa, police found a rented red MG car, three Apple mobile phones, and brand-name handbags worth hundreds of millions of baht. Footprints were also found in the yard of an empty house near where he was staying at the villa.

A Phuket police spokesperson said yesterday senior officers were working closely with Canadian authorities on the investigation.

The initial investigation showed that both 9mm and .38mm pistols were used by the gunmen. It is very likely the attackers are foreigners, he said.

The victim arrived in Thailand by private plane on Jan 27. The reason behind the killing has not been determined by the police.

According to Canadian news media, the victim migrated from India to Canada when he was a child. In addition, Indian authorities wanted the victim for alleged drug trafficking.
