CHON BURI –  Nigerian National Daniel Ukachukwu Emengaha, 25, has been arrested in Chon Buri after police found he was the recipient of two parcels containing 1.2 kg of cocaine mailed to him via the British postal service.

Emengaha, was apprehended at a hotel in Chon Buri’s Phanat Nikhom district on Tuesday. The police were acting on a tip-off last week by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) that two boxes carrying cocaine were being shipped to two locations in the eastern province, Narcotics Suppression Division 2 commander Chayapoj Hasoonha told a news conference on Wednesday.

The first box, which carried 0.72 kg of cocaine, was mailed to a person named Jehpa Ble Pirat at Nuang Perfect Hotel in Phanat Nikhom district. The second, which contained 0.48 kg of the drug, was sent to a recipient named Bled Pat at Likhit Hotel in Muang district.

Pol Col Chayapoj said his surveillance team spotted Mr Emengaha walking in front of Nuang Perfect Hotel on Monday and suspected he may be the drug recipient. They took his photo and showed it to a local mail carrier who confirmed he had earlier delivered parcels to him at the hotel a few times.

Police later asked the mailman to deliver a parcel containing 0.72 grams of cocaine to him at the hotel before closing in on him, Pol Col Chayapoj said.

The Nigerian fled from the room through the ceiling and was caught a short time later in a canal near the hotel.

Police searched Mr Emengaha’s room and seized four mobile phones, a passport and a student ID card for Ramkhamhaeng University under his name, along with two IDs for international student programmes at Assumption University which bore names that matched those of the recipients of the postal packs containing the cocaine.

It was not known if the suspect’s student IDs are real. Officials later escorted him to another post office to collect another parcel.
