McDonald's CEO Raises Alarm Over Chicago Crime

(CTN News) _ McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski is worried about crime in Chicago, where the fast food giant is based; it’s hurting the company’s restaurants and making it harder to hire employees.

Kempczinski told the Economic Club of Chicago Wednesday that crime is “seeping into every corner of our city.”

Everywhere I go, I’m asked the same question these days – what’s going on in Chicago? While it may hurt our civic pride to hear it, there’s a general feeling that our city’s in trouble.”

As Kempczinski pointed out, there are approximately 400 McDonald’s (MCD) restaurants throughout the city that are suffering. “We have violent crime happening in our restaurants…

We are seeing homelessness problems in our restaurants.

We are seeing drug overdoses in our restaurants,” he said. “So, every single day, we see what is happening in society at large in our restaurants.”

A request for comment on Kempczinski’s remarks was not immediately answered by the Chicago Mayor’s Office.

There are also problems at some Starbucks stores (SBUX).

Over the summer, the coffee chain closed 16 locations in Seattle, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and Portland, Oregon.

Starbucks has decided to close some stores in locations that have experienced a high volume of challenging incidents that make it unsafe to continue operating, a spokesperson told CNN Business in 2012.

According to Starbucks’ leaders, national and community dynamics tend to play out in their stores.

In an open letter to employees in July, Debbie Stroud and Denise Nelsen, senior vice presidents of Starbucks operations, said employees are seeing firsthand the challenges our communities face.

Our stores are in thousands of communities across the country, so we’re aware that these issues can happen in our stores too.

According to Kempczinski, there is another challenge as well that needs to be addressed.

Is it safe living in Chicago?

The murder rate is four times above the national average, with other violent crimes being more prevalent than in the average other city. In this way, Chicago is one of the most dangerous cities in the USA, although most crime is heavily concentrated in the most dangerous neighborhoods.
