Eleven Arrested in 13 Police Raids for Distributing Child Porn

The Royal Thai Police have announced the arrest of 11 people all of whom have been charged with possession of child pornography with intent to distribute. The arrests were made in 10 provinces.

The 11 suspects were apprehended after 13 raids were carried out in Chiang Rai; Nakhon Sawan; Yasothon, Khon Kaen; Phatthalung; Chon Buri; Uthai Thani; Pathum Thani; Nonthaburi; and Bangkok, A police spokesperson told a media briefing.

Pol Lt Gen Surachate Hakparn, assistant national police chief and deputy director of the Royal Thai Police’s center for the protection of children, women, and families told a press briefing on Friday. He said police were tipped off.

Police found disturbing images involving children on their tablets, laptop, and home computers, Pol Lt Gen Surachate said. All eleven suspects face up to 5 years in prison and/or be fined 100,000 baht if convicted, he said.

“Every minute, more than 500 disturbing images of children are circulated on the dark web,” he said. “This is considered human trafficking.”

Pol Lt Gen Surachate said the accused filmed themselves having sex with children and sold the video clips to customers or recorded videos to blackmail victims.

Police working to combat human trafficking

Pol Maj Gen Thitawat Suriyachai, chief of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau’s Sub-Bureau 4, told the press that over the past year, approximately 100,000 similar cases involving children have been committed. He said the police believe they are linked to human trafficking rings.

Meanwhile, Nanta Waikakul, director of the Children and Youth Protection Division, said her division has been working to educate children on how to protect themselves from being targeted by criminals. Her division also provides shelter to victims of these heinous crimes.

The National Research Council of Thailand reports most trafficked children were smuggled into the Kingdom from Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar for sexual exploitation or forced labor.

Besides children from neighboring countries, children from Thai ethnic groups in upper Thailand are also falling victim to human trafficking.

Most cases involved girls and also boys were increasingly at risk of being trafficked, the report said.
