Canadian Wanted for Gangland Shooting in Phuket Arrested

A Canadian suspect wanted in the gangland shooting of an Indian gangster in Phuket has been captured in Canada.

An application has been made for his extradition, according to the Office of the Attorney General.

The deputy spokesman of the Attorney General’s Office, Prayuth Petchkhun, yesterday revealed that one of the gunmen, a Canadian identified as Matt Dupre, was arrested in Edmonton, Alberta, on Feb 20.

In the meantime, Mr. Dupre was in detention by the Alberta Court, awaiting the court’s decision on Thailand’s extradition request.

Under Canada’s Extradition Law 1999, Thailand must first submit a formal extradition request along with specific details filed by the prosecutor.

On Dupre’s Facebook page, he posted dozens of photos of himself armed and in combat gear. He joked to a friend on Facebook that “I didn’t choose thug life, thug life chose me.”

Before he left the military in 2013, he was engaged in combat with the Taliban in Afghanistan, according to his LinkedIn page.

After working as a contractor for a private military company, he claimed to have fought ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Among his listed skills are “hand to hand combat, unconventional warfare, and sharpshooting.”

In 2010, he was allegedly awarded a General Campaign Star medal for his “combat rotations in Afghanistan.” A year earlier, he allegedly placed first in a Canadian Forces small arms competition.

Dupre and his alleged accomplice, Mr. Gene Karl Lahrkamp, (Both Canadian Citizens) are facing multiple charges in Thailand. Their charges include; premeditated murder and illegal use of a firearm.

Both are accused of gunning down India National, Jimi Singh Sandhu in the parking lot of his rented beachfront villa on Rawai Beach in Muang district of Phuket at about 10.30 p.m. on Feb 4.

Prosecutors did not provide details on either of the suspects.

Days after the shooting, Thai Police contacted prosecutors seeking an arrest warrant and extradition.

Four days later, a court in Albert, Canada issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Dupre, which led to his arrest and detention.

Mr. Prayuth said the Attorney General’s Office was working on bringing him back to stand trial.

The Department of International Affairs reported that the arrest of the suspects was made possible due to quick cooperation between local and international agencies.

Thailand authorities thanked Canadian prosecutors, the RCMP police and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, among others.
