Pam Danks, aged 52, said relatives had already forked out almost £2,000 for his treatment after he failed to take out insurance

THE sister of a Birmingham man in a coma in Thailand has appealed for help to raise the thousands of pounds needed for his medical treatment.

Single Dennis Asquith, aged 66, suffered a brain haemorrhage in the Pattaya area of Thailand two weeks ago.

Despite an operation to remove a clot, he remains in a coma, cannot breathe unassisted, and may have suffered brain damage.

His sister Pam Danks, aged 52, said relatives had already forked out almost £2,000 for his treatment after he failed to take out insurance – but they had no idea how they would continue to fund it.

“I know it’s his own fault he didn’t have insurance but we don’t know what to do or how we are going to raise the money for his future treatment,” she said.

“People will wonder why I’ve not gone out there to be with him but I only have £4,000 in savings and the money I have will need to go on his treatment.

“I owe another £1,300 already and it costs £40 a day for him to stay in the hospital – and that’s not including the drugs.”

Dennis, a former oil rig worker from Kitts Green, has spent a few months a year in Thailand since retiring and had been renting a house there.

He was originally moved to a government hospital before being taken to a private site for a brain scan which showed he had suffered a haemorrhage.

Pam, from Castle Bromwich, said: “We were told it would cost £6,000 for a neurosurgeon and £2,000-a-night for him to stay at the private hospital so we had to move him back to a government hospital.

“A surgeon at the government hospital removed the clot on his brain but he is still in a coma and I have no idea what the prognosis is. I’ve also heard that if we can’t afford to pay for the treatment and Dennis gets better he will be arrested.”

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We can confirm the hospitalisation of a British national in the Pattaya area of Thailand on June 24. We are in touch with family and are providing assistance.”
