Bangkok to Get Tougher on Motorcycles Riding on Sidewalks

BANGKOK – The Deputy Governor of Bangkok has ordered more stringent action against motorcyclists riding on city sidewalks, saying fines may be increased once again if violations continue.

Despite fines for riding on pedestrian walkways being raised from 500 baht to 1,000 baht, Bangkok officials have acknowledged the problem continues. Deputy Bangkok Governor Sakoltee Pattiayakul revealed statistics indicating Wang Thong Lang district has the highest number of such violations followed by Suan Luang , Lad Krabang and Wattana . On December 12, the city will meet with 5,000 motorcycle taxis to discuss stricter measures after finding they are the most frequent offenders.

Officials from all 50 Bangkok district offices will be performing random checks alongside police and soldiers to step up efforts against the violation, supporting the efforts of municipal workers. Citizens this year reported 12,000 sightings of motorcycles riding on sidewalks but only 1,000 offenders were tracked down.
