163 Kilos of High-Grade Marijuana Found on Roadside

Local residents have found 163 kilograms of compressed high-grade marijuana in garbage bags along the roadside in Bang Phli district in Samut Prakan on Sunday and Monday.

Bang Kaew police chief Pol Col Mongkol Onkaew said local residents notified him on Sunday that 14 garbage bags had been left under the bridge across the Bang Khwang canal in Tambon Bang Chalong by Thepparat road.

On arrival at the scene, police discovered the plastic bags containing compressed high-grade marijuana slabs, which each weighed 1kg.

On Monday, two more bags were discovered in front of a noodle shop at the mouth of Soi King Kaew 37 near Tambon Rachathewa. There were 20 bags each containing 1kg of dried marijuana slabs.

Pol Col Mongkol said he believed the bags were left on the roadside intentionally at each location to be picked up by traffickers.

As part of the investigation, police were looking at CCTV footage recorded by surveillance cameras in the areas. The marijuana was sent to the forensic police department so that DNA and fingerprints could be taken.

Marijuana Smokers Warned Not To Light Up Yet!

Thailand’s marijuana smokers who wish to grow their own pot have been instructed to hold their horses, as the Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) still has some way to go before the updated regulation comes into effect.

According to Wissanu Krea-ngam, the government’s legal expert, changes are planned to affect certain cannabis products but not all and have not yet been passed into law. Especially pot smokers wanting to grow their own weed and light up in public.

It will take 120 days after the Royal Gazette announcement for the changes to take effect, he said. He also added that new regulations on cannabis (marijuana) will soon be drafted to define what constitutes legal cannabis use.

On Jan 27th, the ONCB endorsed the Ministry of Public Health’s proposal to legalize cannabis and hemp in Thailand. The proposal will now be forwarded to Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who will endorse it before it is published in the Royal Gazette.
