 Norwegian Silji Macdison Killed in Tragic Dive Accident off Koh Tao Island

A rescue team, with emergency medical services personnel, rushed to the scene of accident but could not save her life.

 

KOH PHANGAN –  Norwegian tourist Silji Macdison, 22,was fatally injured while scuba diving off the shores of Tao Thong Island, when she was hit by the propeller of another dive vessel.

Miss Silji Macdison, sustained severe cuts to the head and on her left thigh as she was surfacing in shallow waters just off Koh Tao around 2.30 pm.

Witnesses said Miss Macdison began to surface without checking a boat was above her. The propeller blades hit her in the head, causing her to sink and tumble feet up. Her left leg then struck the prop.

The Bangkok Post reported that Police investigator Pol Lt  Jakkapan Kaewkao said Miss Macdison was on a diving course with Scuba Junction dive shop, whose motto according to their website is Safety and Quality First?

Natakorn Meekwan, 23, the captain of the boat was arrested for recklessness causing death. The boat was carrying a group of scuba divers when the accident took place.

Pol Lt  Jakkapan said he was investigating furthering into how the accident happened and to see if the boat opperator Mr Nathakorn was careless and caused death.

They are also checking if  the Scuba Junction dive shop instructor was using an inflatable marker to signal their dive.

The body of Macdison was being held at Koh Tao health clinic pending an autopsy to be performed at Surat Thani hospital.

Meanwhile the Phuket News has reported that two locally-based Russian cave divers are dead after an accident in the Chiewlan Reservoir in Surat Thani.

They and two others, who were based in Phuket, rented a boat December 21 from the Chiewlan Municipal Pier and then dived down to a cave underwater, believed to be known as Tiger Cave.

The dead are Dmitry Dokuchaev, 46, whose body was recovered from the entrance to the cave, and Aleksander Solomatin, who managed to reach the surface and board the boat.
