Irish Teacher Denis Bates Dies in Phuket Motorcycle Accident
PHUKET – Irish teacher Denis Bates who had been working in Thailand has died after he was injured in a motorbike accident on the paradise island of Phuket.
Denis Bates (30) from Dublin had been teaching at the Baan Maireab School in Phuket.
At around 11pm on Friday, he was rushed to hospital with severe head injuries sustained in the crash.
Mr Bates had been in a coma after the accident, but died this afternoon as a result of his injuries at Vachira Phuket Hospital.
According to an officer at Vichit Police Station, Mr Bates’s motorcycle was travelling quite fast when it left the road surface and struck a tree, dislodging his helmet.
The Department of Foreign Affairs last night confirmed that they are “aware of the case” and are “providing consular assistance.”
Relatives have been notified of his death.
