Shetty’s wife reportedly lodged a false complaint with Thai police alleging that her husband had usurped her properties. She demanded that he be tried in Thailand and not be deported

In a prize catch, the Mumbai police have succeeded in bringing back alleged fugitive gangster and drug smuggler Santosh Shetty, from Bangkok to Mumbai, within eight days of his arrest in the Thai capital.

Less than 12 hours after he was deported from Bangkok, the city crime branch brought Shetty before a city court.

The court remanded him to police custody until August 17.

An alleged former aide of underworld gang lord Chhota Rajan, Shetty is wanted by the Mumbai police for connection to several crimes including the sensational killing of advocate Shahid Azmi, one of the defence lawyers in the 26/11 attacks case, on February 10, 2010.

Shetty was arrested by the Thai police on the night of August 4, while indulging in a brawl with a few businessmen at a bar in Bangkok, a few days ago.

Reports from Bangkok said that the Thai police got suspicious when Shetty handed them a fake passport following the fight.

Shortly after, the Thai police raided his residence and found his real passport.

The Thai police arrested Shetty for assault and also found that he was living under the fake name, Nicholous Sharma, also called Nick Sharma.

After going through their records, the Thai police found that he was wanted by Interpol for alleged crimes in India.

The authorities contacted the Mumbai crime branch who brought him back to the city on Thursday night.
