BANGKOK – A30-year-old New Zealand man has died when he fell after trying to climb across to an adjacent balcony at the Chillax Resort in Bangkok, Deputy investigator Pol Capt Utai Wangtan from Chanasongkhram Police Station reported.
The man has been named by the New Zealands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as New Zealand Natioal Ross Anthony Mobbs.
Police and rescue workers from the Por Tek Tung Foundation attended the scene at Samsen Soi 2 just after 12.40am yesterday (5.40pm Tuesday, NZ time) , where they found his body.
According to Deputy investigator Pol Capt Utai Wangtan, the accident has been most likely the result of a boozy night. “Mr Mobbs had been drinking with three of his friends in room 420 on the fourth floor,†Pol Capt Utai told said. He then decided to call it a night and return to his room at no. 422.
But instead of using the door, Mr Mobbs climbed over the railing of the balcony. What might have just been a drunken idea then turned into a tragedy: Mr Mobbs lost grip and was no longer able to pull himself up.
He plummeted four stories to the ground and died instantly.
Officials from the New Zealand Embassy have already been notified of the incident.
Police say the body has been sent for post mortem to establish an official cause of death.
