BANGKOK – Ms. Pornchanok Chaiyapa a 47 year old Thai woman who was in the company of Yoshinori Tetsuo an elderly Japanese man shortly before his disappearance and allegedly stole his money was detained with her taxi driver husband at a military compound in Bangkok on Tuesday for questioning.
Pornchanok Chaiyapa, 47, and her husband Somchai were detained at the 2nd Cavalry Division King’s Guard barracks on Phahon Yothin Road in Phaya Thai district, Thairath reported.
They can be held up to seven days under martial law. Their detention followed three hours of interrogation by police late Monday night. The couple insisted they knew nothing about the disappearance of 79-year-old Japanese father Yoshinori Tetsuo, the report said.
Mrs Pornchanok reportedly admitted she knew Mr Tetsuo and took him for treatment at a hospital in Bang Na district, Bangkok, just before his disappearance on Sept 21.
The woman was later arrested for using Mr Tetsuo’s ATM card to withdraw about 700,000 baht in total from his account. She was charged with theft and later released on bail of 100,000 baht. She and her husband were detained late Monday night.
Police investigators have been questioning witnesses and checking surveillance camera footage to find out the movements of the couple before and after the disappearance of the Japanese man.
Mrs Pornchanok earlier had a Japanese husband and he reportedly died in a fall from a staircase in 2003. Her late ex-husband and Mr Tetsuo both reportedly suffered from heart disease.
