380 Drivers Pledge “Never to Drink and Drive Again” Prior to Court Appearance in Bangkok
SAMUT PRAKAN – A total of 380 people caught for drunk driving took part in a vow-taking ceremony held at Bangpu police station in Central Thailand, with a promise that they wouldn’t ride a motorcycle or drive a car under the influence of alcohol ever again.
The event was chaired by Pol Gen Veerachai Songmetta, the deputy national police chief, and attended by several Samut Prakan police, including Pol Maj-Gen Thamnoon Traitippayapong, the provincial police commander.
Held under the programme, titled “No Drink Driving Again”, the event started with monks giving all the 380 drink drivers caught during Songkran festival a sermon about living a life free from carelessness.
Then all of them were each given a cup of “sacred” water from a bowl bathed with a knife, a spear and bullets and were made to take a vow that they would never ride a bike or drive a car after they drank alcohol or they would die in three days if they break the vow.
After the ceremony, then were all taken to Samut Prakan district court to face charges of drink driving.
