21 Year-old British Tourist Raped By Ferry Worker on Phi Phi Island

KRABI – Police have reported that a Thai ferry deckhand has been arrested for the alleged rape of a 21 year-old British Tourist on the resort island of Phi-Phi in Krabi Province of Thailand.

Deputy national police spokesman, Kritsana Pattanacharoen said Police arrest the ferry worker, Trairat Changsanan, after police examined security camera recordings and other evidence, the suspect stands accused of committing rape in the early hours of April 15th, 2019.

The 21-year-old Briton, (name was withheld), registered a complaint alleging sexual abuse with police on the island on Monday. She said she could not remember the attacker as the assault occurred while she was drunk and asleep outside a hotel restaurant on Loh Dalum beach, Pol Col Krissana said.

The tourist was a lone traveler and went out with an Irishman for drinks on Sunday night. They were returning to their hotel after the bar closed at 1am on Monday. They instead ended up going to sleep outside a beachside restaurant at another hotel.

National police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda apologized to the tourist and ordered the investigation be quickly wrapped up, the deputy spokesman said.

On April 8th a Thai man was arrested and charged in the rape and murder of a German tourist on the Island of Koh Si Chang. The body of Mariam Beelte, 27, was discovered under a pile of rocks near a stairway leading to a site where the flag of King Rama V is mounted.

Her neck was broken and there were indications she’d been struck with a hard object, probably a rock.

Police said the killer assaulted her after she ignored his greetings.

The number of rape cases in Thailand in 2015 has been reported as 3,240, with 2,109 reported in 2016. The Royal Thai Police report 2,535 cases in 2017. Most rape victims are raped by family members or friends. Only 20 percent of rape victims are raped by strangers.
