Omicron Cases Surge in Thailand in the First 2 Month of 2022

Disease control officials report an increase in Omicron Covid-19 infections in the capital, with about 2,000 cases a day. Most of the infections occur among adolescents and the working-age population, according to the report.

Director of the Department’s Institute for Urban Disease Control and Prevention, Suthat Chottanapund, said there were 1,800 to 2,000 infections per day in all areas of the capital.

The principal cause has been close contact with infected patients at venues with poor airflows, such as pubs and bars with restaurant licenses.

From Dec 12 to Feb 8, the DDC recorded 28,256 cases of Covid-19 in the capital, of which 31% belonged to the 20-29 age group. Another 21% were in the 30-39 age group, and 15% were in the 40-49 age group.

According to Dr. Suthat, “the main cause of infections has not changed and we have seen more infections within families due to the easy spread of the Omicron variant.”

According to him, the number of daily deaths has dropped to only one or two per day.

The majority of deaths are caused by senior citizens, unvaccinated people, and people with chronic diseases.

Dr. Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai, chief of the Department of Health, advised people who frequent fresh markets to take precautions, as many clusters have been found there.

According to him, fresh markets should adhere to ministry guidelines regarding preventive measures, such as social distancing, wearing masks, and frequent handwashing.

Despite this, the virus could still remain on banknotes, coins, products, and plastic bags, he noted.

The Public Health Ministry said on Thursday morning that Thailand recorded 14,822 new Coronavirus cases within the previous 24 hours, the highest one-day increase since Sept 11, 2021.

Another 20 people have died as a result of Omicron and underlying health issues. No deaths have been attributed to Omicron alone.

As of Wednesday morning, there were 24 Coronavirus-related deaths and 13,182 new cases. The number of local cases was 14,576, and the number of imported cases was 246.

After recovering from covid-19, 8,503 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals on Wednesday.

Since the pandemic began in early 2020, there have been 2,545,873 Covid-19 cases, including 322,438 this year, with 2,418,380 complete recoveries.

So far this year, 666 people have died, bringing the accumulated death toll to 22,364.

To keep the death toll in perspective in 2021 more people died in traffic-related accidents in Thailand than they have during the entire 2.5 years of the pandemic.
