CHIANG RAI – Local authorities in Chiang Rai found 160,000 methamphetamine pills in a rucksack abandoned by smugglers during a raid on mountainside village in Mae Sai district of northernmost Chiang Rai on Thursday morning.

Soldiers of the Pha Muang Task Force, immigration police and local administrators raided Ban Pha Mee in Pong Pha sub-district of Mae Sai district after learning that armed smugglers bringing in drugs often rested there.

They found 160,000 methamphetamine pills bearing the WY logo in a Wa-style rucksack, an AK-47 rifle, 30 rounds of ammunition, and two hand grenades left in a hillside ditch in the village.

They assumed that traffickers abandoned the items and fled or hid when the raid started.

Meanwhile a raid in Chiang Saen district on Wednesday resulted in the seizure of an M16 assault rifle and equipment plus a large number of explosives and detonators used in a milling business with an expired permit for the explosives.
