Chiangrai Times – Thailand’s Chanatip Sonkham won an Olympic bronze medal in the women’s taekwondo in the under-49kg category at the London Olympics at London’s ExCel Arena on Wednesday.

Ms Chanatip beat Guatemala’s Elizabeth Zamora 8-0 to win the first bronze medal, the second medal for the Thai contingent after 58kg weightlifter Pimsiri Sirikaew earned an Olympic silver medal on July 30.

The Thai performer began her Olympic gold quest by outclassing her Russian opponent to score a 13-1 victory over Kristina Kim in her preliminary round and then dominating Yang Shu-Chun from Taiwan by 6-0 in the quarterfinal.

However, Ms Chanatip’s path to an elusive gold medal ended after she lost her third bout to Spain’s three-time world champion Brigitte Yague 10-9.

There was no stopping the fighter from Phattalung in the bronze medal match, however, as she won an easy 8-0 victory over Elizabeth Zamora Gordillo of Guatemala.
