CHIANG RAI – The Meteorological Department has warned resident of Chiang Rai and other Northern Provinces to brace for heavy rains as the tropical storm ‘Rai’ has already made landfall in Vietnam.

The storm is forecast to move towards the central region of the northeastern part of Thailand later tonight. Storm Rai is expected to weaken to a tropical depression as it moves upward to the northern region in the following days.

Meteorologists said the Upper Northern parts of the country will experience heavy rainfall and strong winds for the time being. People in Northern provinces have been advised to be cautious when leaving their homes.

Meanwhile, at least five people were killed and ten others went missing after storm Rai brought flash floods across Vietnam, authorities said Thursday.

Flash floods and heavy rain also injured 26 people and damaged thousands of hectares of rice paddies, the National Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control said in a report released Thursday.
Storm Rai brought strong winds of up to 80 kilometres per hour when it swept through central Vietnam early Tuesday.
