CHIANG RAI – Provincial authorities have reported that they are looking to contain the price slumps of farm goods by encouraging farmers to raise cattle for beef.

The Chiang Rai Provincial authorities are encouraging local farmers to turn to raising cattle for beef in order to develop and expand the beef cattle market for a stable income.

This has led to the economic improvement in the northern province.

The event, organized until June 10, features the booth sales of beef and quality cow products from local livestock farms and entrepreneurs, a beef cooking contest, performances and a Pracharat market.

Meanwhile,  Chiang Rai Province has performed a ritual to sustain the forest, soil and water and has constructed a living dam.

Dr. Wanna Rattanaphong, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Chiang Rai Rajabhat University, together with the community sages of Chiang Rai, network of community organizations, volunteers and members of the public in Mae Phrik Subdistrict, Mae Suai District recently cooperated in an activity of the Community Sages of Chiang Rai and Living Dam project.

The activity was aimed at conserving and reviving the forest area with a water source in Ban Pang, Mae Phrik Subdistrict. The abbot of Wat Phra That Doi Tung and Mr Passakorn Bunyalak, Chiang Rai Deputy Governor, presided over the ritual to sustain the forest, soil and water.

After the ritual, cloth was wrapped around the trees in the area where the dam construction ritual was performed and the main posts of the Living Dam were set. The work was done in accordance with ancient local wisdom, which is diminishing every day with the use of steel and concrete in modern-day developments. The Living Dam will store water in the soil to afford moisture in the dry season, making the regions natural resources abundant.

The construction was an appropriate application of the Art and Science of King Bhumibol Adulyadej because the community members did what they could to contribute to the work, using materials that can be easily found in nature to construct a sustainable and long lasting dam.
