CHIANG RAI –   Continued heavy rain has triggered widespread flash floods, with tambon Ban Doo in Muang district badly hit on Friday, water in a ditch along Phahon Yothin Road overflowed into nearby shops and car showrooms, damaging vehicles on display.

Chiang Rai army district chief Maj Gen Sanchai Jaruwan said soldiers distributed sandbags to residents in areas vulnerable to floods.

In Muang district, more than 600 homes in 10 villages were flooded. Schools were closed.

In Sakon Nakhon Province authorities have declared five districts disaster zones after floods caused by tropical depression Mangkhut hit several northeastern provinces.

Flooding affected vast swathes of farmland in Sakon Nakhon, affecting Phon Na Kaeo, Phang Khon, Ban Muang, Kut Bak and Khok Si Suphan districts, the provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office said.

The inundation has damaged 3,720 rai of rice fields, 3,440 rai of other crops and 61 roads in the five districts, affecting 24,285 people, the office said. Damage was estimated at 20 million baht.
