BANGKOK – Thailand’s Road Accidents Prevention Center has reported that a total of 380 people died and 3,505 injured in 3,379 road accidents throughout the country during the seven days of the New Year’s festive season, starting from December 25.

Despite a crackdown on drunk drivers by the ruling junta, the number of deaths on Thailand’s roads increased over the New Year period, according to official statistics released on Tuesday.

Of the total death toll, Nakhon Ratchasima had the highest deaths of 15 people, with Chiang Mai having the highest accumulated cases of 139  accidents and injuries of 140 people.

Compared with last year’s road accidents, this year’s fatalities were higher than last year where, 367 people died, 3,344 injured in a total 3,174 accidents during the same period.

A total of 4,672 vehicles, most of them motorcycles, were seized from drunk drivers and impounded during the 11-day road-safety campaign between Dec 25 and Jan 4, National Council for Peace and Order deputy spokeswoman Sirichan Ngathong said

Thailand reported a higher road death rate than any other country apart from war-ravaged Libya in a report published last year by the World Health Organization (WHO).
