Fourteen Elementary School Children Injured after School Bus Slams into Freight Truck in Chiang Rai
CHIANG RAI – Fourteen children and the school van driver were injured this morning when the van carrying to school rammed into the rear of a six-wheeled truck in Wiang Pa Pao district of Chiang Rai this morning.
Pol Lt Col Uthis Wongwai, a police investigator, said the accident occurred at approximately 8am on Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai road at an intersection near Group 6 village of Tambon Mae Chedi.
The van, which was fully loaded with schoolchildren of Wiang Pa Pao School, ran into the rear of a six-wheeled truck which was making a U-turn at the intersection.
Fourteen children, boys and girls aged 5-10 years old, and the driver were injured.
They were admitted to Wiang Pa Pao hospital. Most of them were later released from the hospital.
The driver of the van was taken to hospital and later released, police are investigating footage captured by CCTV camera at the scene of the accident and believe excessive speed was a determining factor in the accident.
No charges have been laid at this time.
