At the opening ceremony of the celebration under the motto “one man standing: Sem Pringpuangkaew hundred years “in the auditorium of the University of Chulalongkorn, former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun Dr. Sem praised for his lifelong dedication to the public. The man of honor was present even though he is currently residing time Hospital Rajivithi full age-related diseases.

“Dr. Sem is the [incarnation] of good hope, and justice. Someone once told me that hard work for the benefit of the community and country, and to devote his life for the nation from remote areas were two goals in the Dr. Sem of life after completing his medical studies. Now that time has passed, it is obvious that Thai society was so successful in achieving these goals, “said Anand.

“It’s a role model for younger generations to be brave, to never give up doing the right thing and never yield to any influence that pose a threat to justice and public good.”

Mainly inspired by the teachings of his mother that “life in poverty is a life of prosperity”, Dr. Sem firmly convinced that being a “country doctor” I would help people who have no opportunities in life.

Dr. Shem chose to work in Samut Songkram province after graduating from Siriraj Hospital in 1935. At that time, the province is facing an epidemic of cholera.

The doctor then 24 years old, independently established a clinic at a local temple to help patients suffering from the disease.

Residents agreed to its simple treatment of saline for the treatment of cholera. And when scarce, made its own target of a local liquor, saved many lives of their patients.

In 1947, Dr. Shem was assigned to work in the northern province of Chiang Rai. His experience as a rural doctor led to the creation of Prachanukroh Chiang Rai Hospital, which until today still serves the local population of about 800,000 people.

The project to ensure that each province had at least one major hospital was also his original idea.

After 17 years of public health service in rural areas, Dr. Shem was appointed to a position of policy decisions by the Ministry of Public Health.

He helped establish the women’s and children’s hospitals, respectively, known as Rajvithi Hospital and Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health.

Some of his many public health projects in development include the creation of provincial hospitals in the nation’s schools and nursing for the production of nurses to work in the rural provinces.
