Flash floods have created havoc at the main border market in Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai

Chiangrai Times – Heavy rain that fell throughout the night resulted in a flash flood flow from the mountains of Doi Tung in Huai Krai Rai, Mae Sai and Mae Chan Chiang Rai. The sudden flood washed several cars at Pangsarapee Green Resort dozens of metres off the road.

Teams of rescuers evacuate stranded tourists to safety.

The resort has been closed for the time being and officials will assess the damage to the area.

Main roads in Mae Sai and Mae Chan are now under more than 30 to 50 centimeters of water, causing difficulties for travelers, as many areas in the Northern Province continued to see heavy rain.

The National Disaster Warning Centre on Friday issued a warning for people in the North, East and South to prepare for widespread scattered rain with heavy falls in some areas from today to Sunday.

People living near hillsides and waterways in Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Trat, Chanthaburi, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi and Satun should prepare for possible flooding, forest runoff and landslides triggered by heavy rain, the centre said.

People in these provinces should closely monitor the situation and can get information from its website www.ndwc.go.th. – Anna Wong CRT
