As the rain continues to fall, Chiang Rai Governor Mr. Phutthiphong Sirimat has ordered all districts to continuously monitor flash floods, forest runoff, and overflowing rivers.
District heads must also prepare equipment, machinery, and personnel to provide immediate assistance 24 hours daily when requested. They must also urgently survey the damage and assist the Chiang Rai Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that water from the Mae Tak and Mae Pao rivers, which receive water from Huai Bong that flooded Don Sila and Phang Nga sub-districts, Wiang Chai district, Chiang Rai province, has flowed into the Mae Tak and Mae Pao rivers, causing the water to overflow and flood houses and agricultural areas.
More than 600 houses have been flooded in Mae Pao and Mengrai sub-districts, Phaya Mengrai district, Chiang Rai province. In some areas, the water level is higher than 1 meter.
The water level at Wat Bun Wat is above 1 meter, and it has also flooded the temple’s ordination hall and vihara.
Villagers and monks have to take boats in and out. The water is expected to remain high for another 3-4 days because it is coming from the heavily flooded Wiang Chai District. Continuous rain has caused the banks of the Mae Tak River and the Mae Pao River to overflow flow.
Villagers were able to move their belongings to higher ground in time because earlier warnings that a large mass of water would flow into the village reduced losses. Officials have provided rice, dry food, and drinking water to help villagers.
Mr. Kritsachit Chompoo Daeng, Chief of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, reported that the flood affected 9 districts of Chiang Rai Province.
Mueang Chiang Rai, Phaya Mengrai, Thoeng, Mae Chan, Wiang Kaen, Wiang Chai, Mae Sai, Mae Chan, and Khun Tan Districts are affected by flooding.
In addition to the houses being flooded, many agricultural areas are completely underwater. Most rice fields have been covered in water for several days, causing them to rot.
Mr. Kritsachit Chompoo Daeng also warned the public of the dangers of flash floods, mudslides, and landslides until August 22-23.
