Chiang Rai Province plans to boost tourism by making a “Sakura Street”.

Chiang Rai Provincial Governor Pongsak Wangsamer announced about an important project to let the province become the blooming Sakura City of the ASEAN region.

Recently, Mr. Pongsak along with his entourage traveled to Kumamoto city in Japan to discuss trade and tourism since the city shares quite similar geographic and weather conditions with Thailand.

The Kumamoto city governor led a sightseeing tour to see some sakuras, which is the national flower of Japan. He also gave Mr. Pongsak some of the sakuras as a gift so that they can be planted in Thailand since the weather conditions here are appropriate for the flower.

Governor Pongsak later sparked an idea to buy more of these flowers and believes this could further take Chiang Rai up another step in terms of tourism development.

The first lot comprises of 1,000 sakura plants and is expected to be delivered to Thailand by December 2014. They will be planted along both sides of Sai Mai road in front of Mae Fah Luang Airport all the way to Phahon Yothin road, spanning a stretch of 20 kilometers.

Mr.Pongsak believes that within the next 2-3 years, the Sakura Street will definitely become an attractive tourism destination generating high income for the province.
