Chiang Rai Police Find 3.5 Million Methamphetamine Pills Hidden in Dense Grass
CHIANG RAI – Police have recovered 3.5 million methamphetamine pills found hidden in the bushes in a village of Phaya Mengrai district on Tuesday morning.
Local Villagers called Phaya Meng Rai police station at 4.30pm to report that 18 bags had been spotted in forest on a road off highway No 1326 in Moo 1 village, in Phaya Mengrai district’s Tambon Mae Pao.
Upon arrival police found 17 fertilizer sacks that were hidden in the dense grass near an intersection in Moo 1 village, the sacks contained 3.5 million speed pills in total, weighing about 417 kilograms.
Police said smugglers often use secondary routes to move drugs and that there wasn’t anyone in the area at the time.
Police assume the drug cache must have have been smuggled across the border and hidden for later collection and distribution to dealers.
They believe the drugs belonged to a Hmong drug ring that has been operating in the Chiang Saen, Wiang Kaen and Thoeng districts of Chiang Rai, and that the bags were hidden pending being smuggled to a central province.
