The seminar was also held to celebrate the recent founding of the Chiang Rai Tourism Industrial Council.

Currently, there are several flights flying from Khunming to Chiang Rai weekly. The Thai – Lao friendship bridge linking Chiang Rai to a Laotian city, which is part of the R3A road linking Thailand, Laos and China, will likely bring more Chinese tourists to the province in future.

According to Sansern Ngao-Rangsi, the deputy director for Asia and the South Pacific Market of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, more than 2 million tourists visited Chiang Rai last year both local and foreign. The majority of foreign tourists were French or Americans. Only 25,000 Chinese tourists traveled to the province last year; however, the number is likely to grow rapidly.

Therefore, Chiang Ria should prepare to be a tourism hub for foreign tourists, especially those from China.

The newly founded tourism council should act as an engine, driving a network of local communities, provincial units and businesses. It should bring them together to create regional strength and enhance the competitiveness of the Chiang Rai tourism industry.
