Thais and expatriates resident in Chiang Rai pay THB690 (THB350 for children).
The Legend Chiang Rai is located in Chiang Rai town on the banks of the Mae Kok River, the Legend released details of its Loy Krathong Festival, Wednesday, hoping to snap up early bird bookings for the 6 November evening festival.
The Loy Krathong Festival is one of the most colorful heritage events in Chiang Rai Province.
The River Kok, that flows through the town and joins the Mekong River around 80 km to the northeast, is in full flow at the close of the rainy season. The riverside setting and the cool evening temperatures (18 to 20 degrees centigrade) make Chiang Rai a premier spot to celebrate Loy Krathong.
The city is now served by more airlines than ever, with Bangkok Airways increasing flights from two to three daily, effective 26 October, Nok Air increasing from four to five flights and AirAsia with four flights daily. THAI Smile also serves the route.
So far, Legend is the only hotel in town to get the Loy Krathong promotions out via email blasts and social media channels.
Apart from a buffet dinner spread, Legend’s riverside entertainment includes a “Lanna-style market and the release of illuminated lanterns, known as “Komloy” that rise on hot air generated by a small paraffin burner positioned at the base of the rice paper lantern.
In the north, releasing lanterns is as popular as floating the traditional krathong, that is usually made from a small section of a banana trunk with flower decorations, incense sticks and coins.
Guests will have the opportunity to float Krathongs on the River Kok from the hotel’s pier. Krathongs suppled by the hotel.
A Lanna show with procession opens the celebrations at 1900.
Other hotels are dragging their feet on releasing their Loy Krathong promotions. Not a single email blast from any of them.
