US$214 Million Heroin Bust in Tachilek,Thai-Myanmar Border Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI – Myanmar Narcotics Authorities have arrested a Burmese man with 133 kilograms of heroin on Tuesday in Tachilek town, the largest haul of illicit drugs ever seized along the Thai-Myanmar border in the Chiang Rai area.

The heroin seizure was worth over US$214 million (6.66 billion Thai baht)

The arrest occurred on the Myanmar side of the Mae Sai River across from Thailand’s Mae Sai district, according to Thai Rath online, the authorities spotted a Myanmar man acting suspiciously while they were patrolling the shores of the Mae Sai River.

The man, identified only as Mr Mong-ta, was driving a motorbike back and forth between the river and an unspecified location. Each trip, he dropped off a bag at an area on the river’s bank, before heading off to pick up another.

The police went in to arrest the man after he had placed down four bags, each of which had 100 slabs of heroin inside.

He allegedly refused to tell police who the intended recipients of the illicit drugs were…
