It’s the hottest month of the year and this year is said to be the hottest  ever.  Thank goodness the Songkran water festival helps cool us off.  Intense heat easily leads to dehydration, so water festivals are very welcomeand long cold drinks of water become life savers as well as thirst quenchers.

All living things need water to live and grow.  Aside from this basic survival  necessity, did you know that water has its own healing powers?  Today people think of spas as pampering salons but in fact spas have been around since ancient times and originated as health places featuring healing waters.

Tania Ho, founder and owner of Museflower Retreat & Spa, Chiang Rai’s foremost holistic healing retreat and wellness center, speaks from her professional experience as a former spa manager at one of the world’s leading spa resort groups.  Says Tania,  “The word SPA is actually an acronym for Salus Per Aquam in Latin, which means Health by Water. So traditionally speaking, a SPA is a place offering healing water treatments, such as Roman baths and mineral hot springs in ancient times.”

Water is an important element in healing and can heal on the emotional level.

How?

This is Tania’s take on our emotional connections to water “My guess is that when we were born, we were surrounded by water inside our mother’s womb. When we submerge in water, we feel free and safe like when we were inside the womb. When we move in water, there are no restriction, no weight, no gravity, and we can feel that we are in a flow. It’s a space where we can reconnect to our natural state and to where we came from – our origin. “

Some ancient and traditional healing waters that are used in different cultures can be seen in –

  • Turkish saunas,
  • Moroccanhamans
  • Japanese hot baths
  • French holy healing springs
  • Hot mineral springs around Japan, the US, and Europe.

In modern spas, contemporary water therapies encompass Hydrotherapy treatments such as –

  • Kneipp Bath – using various water temperatures and pressure to help heal the body.
  • Thalassotherapy – using seawater to heal the body and skin
  • Watsu – an acupressure massage (Shiatsu) performed in warm water by a therapist. It’s a deeply relaxing treatment, as the muscles can relax and stretch more in water.

Different spas offer various different types of water therapies.  At Museflower Retreat & Spa Chiang Rai, guests can find some unusual holistic water offerings that you won’t find anywhere else in this area.

Crystal-Infused Drinking Water

Museflower Retreat& Sap puts crystals inside its drinking water to re-energize the life energy inside the water. If you analyze the water composition, chemically it’s still the same H2O. But now we are looking at what kind of information is carried by the water. It’s the same as looking at a CD or USB, what’s important is the music or information contained within, instead of the object itself. By recharging the life energy of the water, the person who drinks the water can receive that life energy and can help to balance his/her energy.

Waterbeds

Waterbeds are great for promoting a good night sleep, though it may take some people some time to get used to it. The waterbed mattress aligns with the spinal muscle completely, so the back muscles can relax completely. The water beds are also temperature-controlled and help with people who are allergic to dusts. Also there is no bed bug problem with water beds.

Who would benefit from sleeping in a waterbed?   Tania explains. “Most people can enjoy a water bed without any problems.

“But those who are used to sleeping on very hard mattresses or have back pains will take them a few days to one week to adjust to the ‘softness’ of a water bed. The first couple of nights they might still feel back pain because the back muscles are ‘forced’ to relax completely. This may be uncomfortable for a lot of people, and if they aren’t staying here for many nights it’s better that they opt out from the water bed option. Also we do not recommend it for elderly people as it may be difficult to get on or off the water bed for those who have a weak sense of balance. “

Currently Museflower Retreat & Spa is the only hotel in Chiang Rai that offers waterbeds in guest rooms.

Other water healing offerings at Museflower Retreat include salt water healing through Thailand’s first and only Himalayan crystal salt water swimming pool, Thai herbal steam, and Hado counseling, among other holistic treatments.
