Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property Orders Destruction of Pirated Contraband

 

BANGKOK – Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property is set to start destroying counterfeit goods in its stance against copyright infringement.

The destruction of pirated goods is part of sentencing in over 3,400 copyright infringement cases. Officials reported there are nearly a million items to be destroyed, causing more than 3.7 billion baht in economic losses. Most of the items are clothes, electrical appliances and cosmetics.

The destruction of pirated contraband is an annual practice aimed at demonstrating the department’s resolve against piracy. A number of copyright and intellectual property owners will also be taking part in the event, which is scheduled for April 9.

Since the beginning of the year, the department’s task force has arrested 58 culprits, filed 93 lawsuits, and seized more than 21,000 items of contraband in several provinces. – NNT
