Thailand Hopes to Claim Nomura Cup in Chiang Rai
CHIANG RAI – Thailand are eyeing their maiden title at the Nomura Cup which tees off today at Santiburi Country Club. Officially called the Asia-Pacific Amateur Golf Teams Championship, the 26th edition of the biennial event features 104 players from 26 countries.
Thailand coach Boonyarit Uasilprasert said yesterday his players could win the title.
“I have confidence in my players. Our goal is to win the title,” he said.
The Thai players are Nitipong Srithong, Nattawat Suvajanakorn, Poom Saksansin and Danthai Boonma.
Poom was cautious about Thailand’s chance saying a top-three finish would be good for his team. “This will be a good test for us before the SEA Games. Our main target is the SEA Games,” he said.
The SEA Games will be held in Myanmar next month. Among the favourites in Chiang Rai are nine-time winners and defending champions Australia and South Korea.
The Koreans are led by Lee Chang-Woo, who won the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in China last month.
China are spearheaded by 15-year-old Guan Tianlang who won the 2012 Asia-Pacific Championship in Thailand.
With the win, he qualified for this year’s Masters where he became the youngest ever player to make the cut at the major tournament.
With a strong field, Rungsrid Luxitanond, president of the Thailand Golf Association, said that he would be satisfied if Thailand finished third.
