Nurse Examines young Boy for HFMD

Chiangrai Times – The Thai Ministry of Public Health has ordered directors at all hospitals across the country to impose tough measures to prevent or contain the hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in their respective areas.

Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Paijit Warachit gave the order at a meeting Tuesday to introduce important policies and follow up policy implementation in the last quarter of the present 2012 fiscal year, as the number of HFMD patients starts to drop, according to Thai News Agency (TNA).

Dr. Paijit told journalists that staff of all hospitals have been ordered to closely monitor conditions of child patients, especially those with high fever, breathing difficulty, exhaustion and nausea; while local health officials have been instructed to operate war rooms to cope with the disease in the areas where there are more than 10 HFMD patients per day.

The HFMD is spreading in all Thai regions with a large number of patients having reported in the Northeast and the North, including Phayao province, where the virus grows well in heavy downpours and humidity.

Workers are cleaning and sanitising schools and nurseries in many northern Thai provinces, including Tak, to contain the HFMD, as two Hmong children in Tak were diagnosed with the disease but they have recovered. Apart from cleanups, local doctors and nurses have also checked on all kindergarteners in Chiang Rai province.

Meanwhile, experienced virologists were set to conclude this afternoon the cause of the death of a two-year-old girl at Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital in Bangkok. The girl was earlier diagnosed with a virulent viral strain which causes the HFMD.
