CHIANG MAI – A 24 year British woman who was raped in northern Thailand appears to have been blamed by a senior police officer for being drunk when she left a bar.

The 24-year-old victim told police she was attacked while on holiday in northern Thailand.

Staying in the town of Pai in Mae Hong Son, the young woman had been at a bar when she left in the early hours of Sunday October 25.

It is claimed that as she walked back to her room, a man rode up to her on a motorcycle and offered her a ride to her hotel.

After agreeing, the man is alleged to have instead driven her to a wooded area.

Deputy police chief Wutthi Phuawde said: "The main factor that led to the incident was because of an entertainment establishment that opened later than the time prescribed by law, which made the tourist become drunk and senseless."

According to police her attacker then raped her but incredibly, a senior officer blamed the area’s late drinking and the fact the victim was allegedly drunk for the horrifying attack.

Deputy police chief Wutthi Phuawde said: “The main factor that led to the incident was because of an entertainment establishment that opened later than the time prescribed by law, which made the tourist become drunk and senseless.”

Speaking at a news conference, he added that his officers would now be enforcing strict operating hours on bars in the popular tourist destination.

Speaking to Khaosod English, he said: “Police in each jurisdiction will strictly inspect whether any entertainment establishment opens later than the legal closing time.

“They must strictly adhere to the closing time. If any jurisdiction allows any establishment to disobey the closing time, the officers in charge will be punished for negligence.”

Police have arrested a 28-year-old man who has denied he attacked the victim – insisting the sex was consensual.

He has been charged with rape.
