UDON THANI – A young 23-year-old mother and her lover have been arrested in Udon Thani over the death of her 20-month-old daughter, who was sexually abused, the Bangkok Post reported Wednesday.

According to the article the 23-year-old woman, whose name was withheld, and her lover identified only as Nopparat, 22, were arrested separately in Phen district of Udon Thani on Wednesday.

The arrests followed a complaint by relatives that a 20 month old baby girl had been sexually abused and later died at a hospital in Nong Khai in the early hours of Wednesday.

The girl had suffered a severe injury to her rectum, according to the relatives who accused Nopparat of the crime, Khaosod Online reported on Wednesday.

Pol Col Preecha Duangputtha, a senior investigation officer at Nong Khai’s Muang district police, said police immediately went to a resort in Nong Khai where the dead child’s mother had been staying with her lover since Sept 14.

Her husband was away in Chon Buri’s Satthahip district, having been called up for duty as a navy reservist. The woman took the girl to stay with her in the resort room.

Police investigators found blood strains on the bed in the room.

Pol Col Preecha said the investigation revealed that Nopparat had asked the woman to buy some things outside and she left the girl with him on Tuesday night.

When the woman returned to the room, she found that her daughter was unconscious. She took the girl to the hospital at 2am on Tuesday. After that, she returned to the resort and fled with her lover. They were both later arrested.

The pair denied any involvement in the sexual abuse of the girl, but circumstantial evidence implicated Nopparat, police said.

Police initially charged Noppawat with sexual abuse of a girl aged below 13 that caused her death. The mother had yet to be charged but was detained for questioning.
