Some Chiang Rai Students Start School Term in Makeshift Classrooms
CHIANG RAI – Acting Prime Minister has paid a visit to Chiang Rai to comfort victims of the earthquake that jolted the province and the aftershocks that followed. The Acting Prime Minister has also visited the Ban Huai San Yao School that has been used as a makeshift shelter and the famous Wat Rong Khun, which has been severely damaged.
Psychologists and nurses from all over Chiang Rai have been spreading throughout the area struck by the quake in order to assist the depressed earthquake victims.
Students from the Chiang Rai Technological College and the Provincial Task Force have modified the Mae Lao Wittayakhom School’s parking garage and converted it into a makeshift classroom after three of the school’s buildings were damaged from the quake. Engineers have also reported that the building’s structures remained unsafe.
School officials and teachers are quickly preparing textbooks for students to use in time for the school opening on May 19th. They also hope to not postpone the date over fears that students may be lagging behind in class.
At Thanthong Witthaya School in quake-rattled Mae Lao district, classes were being held in the space under the old school building, where the teachers and students were laboring to ensure that the bare necessities, such as chalk boards, were in working order. The main school building suffered massive structural damage from the magnitude 6.3 earthquake and the aftershocks that followed, and has been indefinitely closed.
Transport Minister Chatchart Sittipan said that aftershocks have caused damage to roads, leaving cracks in several areas. Therefore, he has decided to lower a couple of pedestrian bridges to prevent possible collapse from any further tremors.
