CHIANG RAI – Soldiers and firefighters in Chiang Rai province have been able to extinguish wildfires that occurred in Doi Pui Forest while estimating the total area affected at over 500 rai.

Soldiers and firefighing crews were sent to Doi Pui Forest following reports of wildfires located within Mae Puem National Park close to Ban Hua Doi Village in Tha Sai subdistrict, Mueang district.

The situation was exacerbating as the fires were spreading rapidly to many spots, including mountain slopes, making it difficult to put out the flames.

As firefighting efforts continued on the ground, helicopters dump water collected from Phaya Kao Reservoir on the fires. Officials managed to get the fire under control and will monitor the area for the next 24 hours, more than 500 rai of forest area was destroyed.

Authorities said that slash-and-burn practices were the cause of this incident, judging from evidence acquired from the site.
