Seismological Team Keeps Close Eye on Chiang Rai after Nepal Earthquake
If any earthquake occurs, the seismometers will be able to detect the movement with high accuracy, resulting in very fast warnings to the public, the director said
CHIANG RAI – The Northern Meteorological Center has kept on closely monitoring signs of earthquake in the upper part of Thailand after the powerful quake struck in Nepal last Saturday.
Director of the Northern Meteorological Center Thanasit Iam-ananchai reaffirmed the Nepal earthquake had no impact on Thailand at all. However, he said high-tech seismometers have been installed to detect earthquakes in all provinces in the northern region, especially where fault lines are situated.
If any earthquake occurs, the seismometers will be able to detect the movement with high accuracy, resulting in very fast warnings to the public, the director said.
He also advised local people not to panic at quake predictions made by some academics and fortune-tellers. He stated, “Earthquake is a natural phenomenon which no prediction is possible by the existing technology.”
Mr. Thanasit also mentioned about a visit to Mae Lao District in Chiang Rai of a seismological team on Wednesday 29 April.
He said the team just monitored the epicenter of a powerful earthquake happening there in May last year. Although the team found no signal of future earthquakes, they continuously keep watching the movement at each fault line.
