Schools And The Airport In Fort Lauderdale Were Closed Due To 20 Inches Of Rain
(CTN News) – As a result of a sudden flash flooding event in southern Florida, the Fort Lauderdale airport and Broward County Public Schools were closed on Wednesday due to up to 20 inches of rainfall.

As a result of the flooding, there have been a number of videos posted on social media that describe people’s homes getting flooded amid flashes of lightning, water rushing into the doors of an airport terminal, and water flowing almost level with the hoods of cars parked along the street.

During the hours surrounding 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Fort Lauderdale airport tweeted that, as a result of the incident, it would be closed until at least noon on Thursday as a result of the disruption.

Officials at the airport have confirmed that flooding has continued to affect the facility despite the closure of the airport’s roadways.

In spite of the fact that stalled vehicles are being removed from the upper- and lower-levels of the building, the main entry/exit artery remains flooded and congested with slow-moving traffic, which is a result of the removal of the stalled vehicles.

By the time 2 a.m. rolled around on Thursday morning, the exits roadway had reopened and people could begin catching up with their family and friends who were waiting outside the airport prior to their departure.

As of right now, the arrivals roadway is still closed.

According to the Broward County Public Schools, on top of the schools and district offices being closed on Thursday, all extracurricular activities are also going to be cancelled.

There was a heavy rainstorm about 5 to 10 miles southeast of Fort Lauderdale that was dropping about 2 to 3.5 inches an hour at a rate of about 25 mph.

National Weather Service officials have warned that Fort Lauderdale could receive another one to two inches of rain in the coming days.

What is the best month to go to Fort Lauderdale?

The high season in Fort Lauderdale begins in early spring and ends in late summer as families return from summer break. This season brings the warmest temperatures, most beautiful beach days, and biggest crowds to the region.
