BANGKOK– A Pakistani man suspected of killing a Thai woman in Chiang Mai last week has been arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport. Immigration Division 2 police arrested Syed Muhammadali, 41, a Pakistani national, at a Sri Lanka Airlines check-in counter about 7am yesterday.

Police had earlier announced that Mr Syed was a suspect in the murder and was about to flee the country.

Officers checked his luggage and found several valuable items belonging to Duangduen Harris.

The suspect told police he knew Duangduen and got into a fight with her the night she died, but he refused to provide any further information during interrogation.

He was handed over to Chiang Mai police.

Duangduen, 41, owner of the Midnight Bar in Chiang Mai, was found stabbed to death inside a room at Lai Thai guesthouse in tambon Chang Klan in Muang district on Oct 18.

She was found naked, with multiple knife wounds to her neck, chest and shoulders.

Local police examined security camera footage that showed the woman walking to her room with the suspect at 2.17am on Oct 17. The suspect left the room alone roughly six hours later.

Duangduen’s body was found the following day.

Police investigators examined surveillance cameras near the hotel and discovered that the suspect went to a provincial bus terminal and boarded a bus to Bangkok on Oct 17.

In Bangkok, he immediately went to the southern bus terminal and boarded another bus to Hat Yai.

The investigation team eventually learned he was about to board a morning flight yesterday with Sri Lanka Airlines.

Police sought cooperation from Immigration Police Division 2 at Suvarnabhumi airport to arrest the suspect.
