BANGKOK – Outgoing Deputy Prime Minister M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula told the media before the official announcement of the new cabinet that he would not accept any advisory post offered by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha because he did not agree with the “divide and rule” style in economic management.

He told Thai PBS that if the prime minister believed that Mr Somkid Jatusripitak, advisor to the National Council for Peace and Order, was suitable to be deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs then the latter should be allowed a free hand to handle economics and there was no need for an economic adviser.

The embattled deputy prime minister said he had no grudges against Mr Somkid and if he found out there was anything not right he could directly talk to Mr Somkid. He insisted that the new economic team to be headed by Mr Somkid should warrant support and there should not be any “divide and rule” system.

M.R, Pridiyathorn also told reporters he had not been approached by Mr Amphon Kitti-amphon, secretary-general of the cabinet, reported to be assigned to see him with an offer from the prime minister.

And even if he was approached with the offer, he said he would not accept it any way.

Asked about the “divide and rule” system, he said he thought he had been watched all along to find fault with them and this was discouraging.  He added he he didn’t want this to happen to Mr Somkid.

Asked to elaborate the “divide and rule”, the outgoing deputy prime minister shot back at the reporters saying:  “How about you are working and then there is an adviser who keeps monitoring you. What does that mean?  It means you are either right or wrong. If Mr Somkid is to take care of economic affairs, then there should not be an adviser to monitor him.”

Asked if he feel hurt for being removed from the cabinet,  he said he wasn’t hurt became he joined the cabinet in order to work and did the best he could.
