Northern Thailand Provincial Police Focus on Eradicating Child Prostitution

CHIANG RAI – Deputy Commander of the Provincial Police Region 5, Pol.Maj.Gen. Songtham Anlaphat, told Thai Media that Police Region 5 has arrested 30 suspects of human trafficking since January 2016.

Gen. Songtham Anlaphat said the Provincial Police Region 5 had continuously and seriously prevented and suppressed human trafficking with a focus on eradicating child prostitution.

The largest number of human trafficking cases in Region 5 provinces were in Chiang Mai province.

He said their were six cases in Chiang Rai, 18 in Chiang Mai and the rest in Phayao and Phrae, 22 of the cases involve underage prostitution.

In Chiang Mai, there were a number of entertainment venues which organized prostitution with children under the age of 18, the deputy commander said.

Meanwhile, In Bangkok the U.S. Ambassador to Thailand praised Thailand for its efforts to crack down on human trafficking during his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan.

He said the US would be able to elevate Thailand’s ranking in its Trafficking in Persons Report form tier 3 to tier 2 due to Thailand’s recent progress in that area.

He praised the Thai government for its commitment towards solving human trafficking issues in the country and prosecuting those involved.
