CHIANG RAI – The Meteorological Department Tuesday warned residents in the North, particularly in the provinces of Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai and Nan, of severe conditions due to continuous and heavy rain during this period and another round of downpours from Thursday to Saturday.

In Chiang Rai’s Muang district, where three tambons were hit with flash floods on Monday, students and teachers at Huai Plu Wittaya School in Tambon Tha Sud began a big clean-up yesterday. The job is expected to continue today before classes can resume.

Runoff triggered by the heavy rain flooded about 30 houses and hundreds of rai of farm land in Chiang Saen district.

Water pouring down a mountain inundated Mae Aeb, Huay Khoi Loi and Huay Nam Yen villages in tambon Ban Saeo, Chiang Saen district chief Pinit Kaewjitkhongthong said after visiting the area on Thursday.

About 30 houses were flooded, and a main road and bridge linking the three villages were also under water and impassable to small vehicles. Hundreds of paddy and corn fields were submerged, reports said.

Soldiers helped local residents evacuate their belongings and animals to higher ground.

Mr Pinit said there had been a heavy downpour on the mountain overnight, and it poured flooded down  into lowland areas on Thursday morning.

Mae Aeb Witthayakhom school suspended all classes on Thursday, the district chief said.

Similar major cleaning activities were underway in tambon Nang Lae, where 50 homes were hit by the flash flood.
