High Tides and Torrential Rains Cause Mass Flooding in Chonburi

CHON BURI —  Continuous overnight rain and high tide has caused flooding in the eastern province of Chon Buri as roads and homes were inundated under 50cm of water.
Some roads were impassable for smaller vehicles, while many cars slipped off Sukhumvit road because of the flood. There were no reports of any injuries.
Authorities in Sriracha, Bang Phra, Huai Kapi, Chao Phraya Surasak, and Ang Sila municipalities used water pumps to drain water while local residents were warned of higher levels of flood water.
In the northeastern province of Buri Ram, heavy rain over the past 2-3 days has caused forest runoff from Phnom Dong Rak mountains to flood highway no. 224 Ban Kruat-Lahan Sai route and cut off the road for three metres. At least two cars have fallen into the subsided road,though there were no reports of any injuries.
Authorities at Ban Kruat district have prohibited use of the road and recommended motorists use another routes.
The water level in Mun River in Ubon Ratchathani was still high and overflowing to flood riverside homes, but the water level was seen declining by 1-2 cms.
The lower areas of the province in the provincial seat and Warin Chamrap were inundated but it was expected that the situation would return to normal within 2-3 weeks.
Meanwhile residents downstream from the Pasak Chonlasit Dam are bracing for more flooding as the dam has exceeded its maximum capacity and water must be released.
Boonchob Homkesorn, director of the South Pasak Water Maintenance Project said that Pasak Chonlasit Dam contained 1.249 billion cubic metres of water, above its maximum capacity of 960 million cubic metres.
The dam will have to discharge water in order to reduce the water level.

He has alerted residents in Tha Ruea, Nakhon Luang and the provincial seat of Ayutthaya to be prepared for higher water levels by some one meter high.
