CHIANG RAI – The Department of Livestock Development (DLD) is providing vaccine shots to prevent an outbreak of the foot and mouth disease during the rainy season in the northern province of Chiang Rai.

Officials of the DLD offices in 18 districts in Chiang Rai are quickly providing shots to cows and buffaloes to prevent spreading of the foot and mouth disease.

According to the DLD, though no signs of the outbreak have been detected at the moment, preventive vaccine shots are necessary due to unstable weather conditions associated with rain and warm air intermittently. It is the season most prone to disease outbreaks. In addition, Chiang Rai province is a major site of cow and buffalo trade which could be at risk of contracting diseases during a transfer process.

Farmers have been warned to immediately report to the Livestock Department officials if any sick animals are found as a means to control the possible spreading of diseases.
