CHIANG RAI – A Golden Triangle Triathlon that links three Mekong region countries, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar,  is scheduled for 3 to 4 May in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai province.Inside1

Organized by the Ministry of Tourism & Sports in co-operation with Satellite Television Broadcasting Foundation, the sporting event marks His Majesty the King’s coronation day.

The other objective , according to the organizers, is to strengthen relations with other Mekong Region countries; Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and Yunnan and Guang Xi provinces in China.

The first past the post in the open category (1.7 km swim, 53 km bike race and 12 km run) will be presented with the Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn trophy and Bt50,000 in prize money.

All the individuation triathlon categories, a team rely and the duathlon have prize money for the first four finishers.

Participants will cover 66.7 km starting with a 1.7 km swim from a Mekong River sand dune island in Laos to the Hirannakhon Pier, on the Thai side of the river.

That will be followed by a 53 km cycle race from the Harannakhon Pier in Mae Sai to Chiang Saen Police Station, around the town’s main road and back to the Tea Oils and Plant Oils Development Centre in Mae Sai a distance of 53 km.

Finally, the 12-km run starts at the tea oil centre heads for the border town of Tachilek in Myanmar, facing Mae Sai town,  to the Shwedagon Pagoda Replica and back across the border bridge to the tea oil centre in Mae Sai.

Despite flagging this event as an international race, very little media attention has been achieved even in neighbouring countries Myanmar and Laos. There are a couple of bill boards in Chiang Rai town, token efforts to promote the event to a wider audience.

Press information was delivered late and up until the Songkran Festival, even the sporting community of Chiang Rai was not well informed. There was no launch press briefing.

Bangkok Airways is supporting the event with a discounted fare and promising to carry bikes for participants free of charge.
