PHUKET –  German tourist Frank Retsch has drowned at Nai Harn Beach, Phuket Wednesday after ignoring a safety warning sign urging beach-goers not to swim in rough weather, police said.

Mr.Retsch managed to save his brother-in law from drowning however could not save himself from the same fate.

Lifeguards were unable to resuscitate Mr. Retsch, 34, after pulling him from the surf. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Vachira Phuket Hospital.

“Mr Retsch came to Phuket with his wife, sister and brother-in-law for their holiday,” Rawai Mayor Aroon according to the Phuket Gazette.

Retsch’s wife told police that they went for a swim despite red flags having been put up at the beach by authorities to warn tourists the sea was too rough to enter.

The couple were swept out to sea by powerful waves. Retsch was drowned but his wife was rescued by other tourists who witnessed the incident, police said.
