German, 63, Found Hanged, House burned in Kanchanaburi

Police in Kanchanaburi Thailand told a press briefing Monday that a 63-year-old German man had been found dead after a fire destroyed his house. The German man had recently split from a 21-year marriage with his wife.

Police identified the dead man as Mr. Uwe Albrecht. According to Kanchanaburi police, he was found hanging from the wrought iron fence of the house.

According to the Bangkok Post, there was a spray-painted message on an exterior wall of the charred house, saying, “21 years and no cheating but never enough, fuck you”

In an interview with police, Mrs. Kamolwan Albrecht, 60, said her husband left his country for her and lived with her for 21 years.

Apparently, Mrs. Kamolwan moved to Phanom Thuan from Kanchanaburi last month, leaving her husband alone to live in the house. As soon as she learned of his death, she immediately rushed to the scene. She did not elaborate on why she moved to Phanom Thuan.

It has been speculated that Mr. Albrecht hung himself because he was hurt when his wife abandoned him.

Police said a post-mortem examination will be conducted on the body to determine whether the man committed suicide or was murdered.

According to a Kanchanaburi police spokesperson, the fire was reported at about 3:30 am at house 452 in Kanchanaburi Villa Housing Estate in Tambon Tha Makham of Muang district.

To put out the fire, ten fire engines from the municipalities of Muang, Tha Makham, and Pak Phraek were dispatched.

There was a fire raging in a two-storey house when the firefighters arrived. To enter the premises, they had to cut a padlock to open the main gate. It took them about an hour to extinguish the flames.

According to neighbours, the dead man and his Thai wife lived in the house for about 10 years. Recently, she only visited him occasionally.

They said he rarely spoke to them.

A few minutes before 3:30 am, they heard three to four loud explosions inside the house. When they ventured outside to investigate, they found the home on fire. They immediately contacted the police.

When firemen and police searched the second floor, they discovered two 15-kilogram gas cylinders, each surrounded by four burned car tires.

Their theory was that the German set fire to the car tires, intending to burn down the house, before hanging himself on the cast iron railing. Police said investigations were still being conducted.

About Kanchanaburi:

Kanchanaburi is famous for its bridge over the River Khwae, which attracts both Thais and foreigners to the area.

The steel bridge is an important historical monument in Thailand. In Kanchanaburi travel guides, this attraction is recommended as a symbol of the province. In World War II, the bridge was part of a railway line and saw conflict and bloodshed.

The Thai government renovated the damaged bridge in 1946, following World War II. Each year, from late November to early December, there is an exhibition about World War II and the history and archaeology of the Bridge of the River Kwai.

The event will also feature folk performances, goods markets, and a variety of other entertainment. Another World War II-related site nearby the bridge is the Don Rak or Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, where remains of prisoners of war who died while building the railway are buried.
